saturday oct. 29th from 1-6 in front of our shop and UNIV is the place to be.
hungry? good.
need a sweet treat? good.
like food trucks? yay, so do we!
i'm hoping my friend adrian will stop by to play a little ukulele for us. *fingers crossed*
bring the whole family for some hawaiian fun!
our girls rocked the encinitas fashion show! they were so cute and so well behaved; quite professional really. i think having their hair done by a pro made a big difference (thanks katy!).
a MILLION thank yous to greta, erin, eri, josh, and dave for hanging out at the shop while the girls got ready, driving us 5 blocks to the venue (couldn't get the shoes messed up!), standing at the end of the runway so the girls would know when to turn around, and getting the girls back into their own clothes at the end of the evening. greta and eri took photo's; here is greta's post and i can't wait to see what eri captured.
i had big ambitions of taking lots of photo's of the girls getting ready. i also figured since they'd be dolled up, i'd create a fun backdrop and take portraits as well as some group shots. yeah well, most of that didn't happen.
i did manage to snap some shots with the real camera, but i soon realized i was needed elsewhere. thank goodness greta brought her suitcase full of tricks and DID manage a little photo shoot.
it's not easy to be the designer and photographer. *must remember to get a photographer for each event.* maybe it'll be greta -her photo's are great.
here are the few snaps i did get:
mom and i gave ourselves a high-five because everything ran smoothly. we staggered the arrival of the girls; katy had 15 minutes with each one for hair; then we got them dressed and were able to play around a bit more with styling each outfit. this is another area where greta came in handy.
two down, five more to go.
these two girls opened and closed our portion of the fashion show. we knew they could handle the pressure :-)
patiently waiting for their turn with katy.
these next photo's were taken with the iPhone.
i'm bummed however because i missed one of the girls! actually i got a photo of kazuki with her cute braids and flowers, but i guess i didn't finish the process (in instagram) because the image is gone. :-(
antoinette headband was perfect with viviennes short blonde curls.
for us, braids never go out of style.
our crocheted headband/necklace was perfect on amelias cute bobbed hair.
devlins hairdo and antoinette headband were hits with everyone.
gretta got to wear a molly bandana. she didn't want to, but she was a professional and rocked it!
this look was my favorite.
here is katy with all the girls. she did such a great job. the hair really enhanced the look.
one more...
here's the group as we arrived at the venue. in a short time they would walk down the runway to hoots and hollers. really. it was so cute, the audience responded so well to the girls and the clothes.
a few of the girls asked it they could do it again. huge smiles and big hugs ended the evening.
sure, let's do it again!
xo- m•o•m
Downtown Encinitas is having its 3rd annual Fashion Show tomorrow evening, Saturday, and we're in it! This is our first time and we've got 7 adorable little girls walking the runway for m.o.m and they are gonna kill it!
We've had so much fun putting together the outfits, styling them "fashion show like"; you know, slightly over-the-top. Our dear friend Katy will do the girls hair, and Greta is gonna help us style the outfits and her daughter Devlin is one of our models.
Everything has fallen into place quite nicely and all of our idea's have, so far, come to be.
7 pair of Huaraches -check.
Black, white, and various day-go colored tights -check.
Groovy hair ideas -check.
The Fashion show is a fundraiser for local high school kids, so if you can join us Saturday night it's for a good cause... and it'll be a hoot! Who knows how our 7 little models will do on the catwalk? I can't wait to see!
To here to purchase tickets to the event.
outfit idea
a m.o.m model.
total cuteness.
bright tights. of course we're not going to use them in the "normal way."
This will be a fun way to spend a Saturday night.
We've got two new dresses and one new tunic to show, as well as our usual fun fabric combinations!
Hope to see you there!
okay last night we did something fun.
we had a scrap meet.
what's a scrap meet? well, we invited a group of gals to the shop last night, asked them to clean out their fabric bins, bring a little something to nosh on, and we'd have a free-for-all on a big pile of scraps.
a super huge thank you to michelle of studio-surface for creating our groovy invite.
it turned out to be a fun evening. there was lots and lots of fabric and some amazing food (everyone has a little martha in them nowadays don't they). and then this morning, we donated the remaining scraps to our local community resource center.
this was a fun way to clear out a craft room, take home some new fabric, and donate to a local charity. everyone wins.
michelle made a really good sangria.
stacey made her notable individual pies. you may recognize her work from pie day #3.
stacy will be selling her sketch and notebooks this saturday at m.o.m - come by and check out her cool stuff.
some pre-scrap scouting.
a little noshing. this picture cracks me up; i mean, did they practice this pose?
get a load of these. amber made individual creme brulee. see, there's a bit of martha in that girl.
after full bellies, the fun began. fabric was everywhere! we didn't have enough table space, so on the ground it went. a few of the women stated when they first arrived that they wouldn't be taking anything home, this was simply a chance to clear things out. yeah, lia made that statement... uh-huh, that's her picking through the stash.
oh yea, it was on!
bianca, eve, and betsy took it to another level.
the end. scavenging was finished, time for more treats and laughter.
that pile of fabric is what we donated this morning; it was 2ft high and 5ft long.
doesn't our little shop look cute in the evening?
big thanks to: greta for ignoring her inner voice and joining us, my sister jessica for coming up from golden hills, lia for bringing eve, bianca for this bit of crazy, melissa and betsy for the amazing goat cheese with lavender salt!, amber for her culinary goodness, stacey for her perfectly sized sweet treats, kelli for coming by after a long day at work, michelle for taking home a jessica(fied) necklace and betsy for taking home this.
have a great weekend!
i like living in a small beach town.
sitting here in the studio with the big door open (a metal roll up wall), friends wave hello as they walk by.
we have daily sightings of cute surfers and skateboarders (not just boys mind you). we ride our bicycle to pick up lunch, and the nice people at the local café allow us to pay later when we're short on cash. it's the small things.
tomorrow night begins the summer classic car night here in town. on the 3rd thursday of the month (for the next 3 months, i think), hwy 101 will fill up with classic cars and bad retro '50's bands from 5:30 - 7:30. this year will be the first time we will stay open for the event. you see, our shop is at the south end of town -the forgotten end- which of course means it's actually the cool end *wink*. encinitas, finally figured out that it might be good to pay a little attention to our end of town, so there will actually be activity down here tomorrow night - two car clubs and a band. hopefully, this will translate into future customers for us.
when we received the letter from the encinitas downtown mainstreet association with the classic car night announcement, mom and i had to laugh out loud -but totally in a, "we love our little town" kind of way ... here's what it said:
"...special thanks to Stellar Solar for hosting the SMOG Test Only Awards lot, to Charlie's Foreign Car for hosting clubs in their Regent Lot, and to Cardiff Classics for making room for a club and two bands! We now have two music venues: SMOG Test Only and Cardiff Classics! The Small Mall, SofSpra, and The Black Sheep will also host car clubs."
it's just so funny and sweet.
if you haven't any plans thursday night come on out. and don't forget the south end of town, word on the street is it's the coolest.
we've got news: we'd like to share with you a new project we've been working on for the past few months, called 42nd Prop House, we figure we're far enough along in the process that we can start talking about it.
ever since we opened our store, visitors have commented on and asked if they could purchase the furniture we use to merchandise m•o•m products. we've always declined the offers because we need the pieces. well we've changed our minds, slightly.
encinitas and the greater san diego north county has a plethora of photographers, event planners, and prop stylists. a trend we've noticed, thanks to all the photo blogs, is that vignettes are all the rage, and therefore props of all shapes, sizes, and eras are in demand. we've got a nice collection of vintage pieces that will be perfect and we're now making them available to photographers, stylists, and event planners.
the day rates will be posted along with each items photo and measurements. a new page on this blog will be created for 42nd Prop House, for easy access. so check back for that.
these images share but a small glimpse at what is available. shoot us an email if you're interested, we'd be happy to help you create a groovy look. mom (at) 42ndandorange (dot) com.
tomorrow is another instalment of let's eat! we've got a yummy quinoa and chicken salad with peaches for you.
The Queen Bee Market was two weeks ago and I haven't said a word about it! Probably because the day after the market it was Mother's day and then after that we jumped back into the day to day of the shop, and then after that I had a Crohn's disease flair-up, which put me in bed for about 5 days with various doctor and lab visits thrown in. Sounds like fun doesn't it?
Happy to report I am well enough to be at the shop: half-day yesterday and I'll work half a day today, feels good to be out, standing up straight, and not in pain!
packing up for the market
We've done a number of craft fairs over the years, including The first Renegade Craft Fairs in both Brooklyn and San Francisco, Patchwork in Orange County two or three times (I can't remember), Felt Club in Los Angeles, and others that I cannot recall right now. I was thinking this morning about QBM and what I might say about it because it was different from all the other events we've done. What makes it different? How can I describe it? Then it hit me... nice. Everything about QBM was nice, really nice. I mean that sincerely and in no way should you read any condescension in my use of that word... I mean seriously, these were some frickin' nice people!
Nice
–adjective, nic·er, nic·est.
1. pleasing; agreeable; delightful: a nice visit.
2. amiably pleasant; kind: They are always nice to strangers.
The organizers (sisters Mique and Jessica) were friendly and ran a smooth and well organized show. Our fellow vendors were enthusiastic and their products were lovely.
cute goody bag for the vendors
no. 17 cherry tree lane: the owner of this cute vintage emporium is Rachel -talk about nice... and funny! So happy to have met her.
look at this awesome hair-do! i couldn't resist, i think the girl thought i was a bit crazy for asking to photograph her hair.
this is our booth; busy and colorful and layered with pattern. surprised? i think not.
inspire lovely, by debee. i am a complete sucker for packaging and therefore adore what she does. and she's a fellow san diegan and super nice!
redstar ink: loved the graphic simplicity of this line of paper goods... another san diegan! blog.
okay, do your best to ignore the awful hotel banquet room carpet (why must hotels have such gaudy carpet that clashes with EVERYTHING?!)... this photo is all about stripes: striped dress, striped bag, striped shoes -love it!
loved the floating clusters of fabric sraps in the pleated poppy booth. blog.
creme de la gems: this booth killed me! check out that awesome background set. blog.
I barely scratched the surface as far as photographing all the booths. Luckily, other's were more on top of the action; check out Angry Julie's flickr stream.
There you go, a fair glimpse at the QueenBee Market. The very nice show with extremely nice vendors. It was a great way to spend a Friday night and Saturday day!
-I hate that I didn't get a picture of April and her Funky Vintage Lovely booth. We met a year or two ago when she and her husband happened upon our shop while on vacation (and she gave m.o.m a little shout-out). She is so friendly and runs a great business and blog. You can see images of her booth in the flickr stream, and she's done a nice show recap on her blog.
Happy weekend to you!
If you are a local, we can't recommend this little gem enough. Bianca of bink & boo creates thee cutest line of goodies. There's stuff for women, the home, and the wee ones. Her fabric choices always knock our socks off, as does her packaging! I'm a sucker for a witty tag line.
If you're in the North County area, head over to Bixby & Ball to check out Bianca's pop-up shop and all that Bixby & Ball have to offer, and heck then you'll be right there in the heart of the Cedros Design district -so go shopping and eat some good food!
While we're busy getting ready for the Queen Bee Market this Friday and Saturday, plus a pop-up shop at our store with Fern & Feather, Modern Crush, Siobhan Ridgway Photography, Zippity, and Grace Happens, we thought we'd share some groovy blog links with you.
SFGirlbyBay, pictures and pancakes, What Katie Ate, Cannelle et Vanille, Modern Kiddo, Dustjacket Attick, White Trash Beautiful, Bloesem, Bloesem Kids
Have a great day. It's gorgeous here and we're taking full advantage of it... lunch outside, under an umbrella.
